Green Avani Foundation was set up in 2019 with the aim of bringing change in the locality of Lohegaon, Pune by planting trees & increasing the green cover on barren hills surrounding the area. Green Avani Foundation is a registered Non Governmental Organisation [NGO] & a Non Profit making Organisation working together with local communities & supporters to achieve its objective of nature conservation.
Pune is a rapidly developing city & once famous for its soothing climate. Since last 10-12 years, Constructions & development is happening in every nook & corner of the city & it has taken toll on the climate of the city. Lohegaon is one of the fastest growing area of Pune city & has seen a lot of changes in last 5 years.
Green Avani Foundation is an official group of responsible residents of Lohegaon who joined hands to bring a positive change in the situation by making the surrounding area greener by undertaking tree plantation on larger scale & organizing post plantation care drives to increase the survival rate of the plants.
Green Avani is primarily working for environmental conservation & bringing larger area under afforestation.
Even before the inception of Green Avani, multiple plantation drives were initiated by Mr. Prashant Lage & this initiative received attention of locals & officials who then became the supporters & started volunteering for the cause.
Plantation programme was first started in June 2019 & since then Green Avani Foundation is undertaking the same at regular intervals at different places with required official permissions. On every Saturday & Sunday members of team Green Avani, along with the volunteers from all over Lohegaon area organised a planned ‘Post Plantation Care Drive’ wherein we all water the plants with required quantity, arrange & repair the fencing, put fertilizers & soil, remove weed, create soil berms & do miscellaneous tasks that are required for smooth growth of the plants. Based on the observations during the care drive we assess the areas where there is more requirement for care & cover them in following care drives. We choose variety of native plants which grow taller, green year around & will provide fruits for birds & insects & flowers to honey bees.
Till date Green Avani has planted more than 500 plants & are regularly taking care of them. This plantation program is not only appreciated by the residents of Lohegaon but also orphanages, schools & old age homes are benefited through it. Nirmal Seva Vruddhashram is also one of such organisations. They invited Team Green Avani to the old age home for women &
team Green Avani left with a promise to help them undertake the plantation drive in the old age home.
To create awareness among residents & especially children of the society Green Avani organised a drawing competition based on the theme of environment conservation for children of age group 3-14 years in the month of November 2019 & it received a tremendous response.
Drawing competition was followed by drawing exhibition which appreciated the efforts of the children & helped to understand the need for nature nurturing.
Our team of Green Avani Foundation has also volunteered in Marathon -2019, one of its kind happening in Lohegaon for the first time ever whose motive was environment protection & bringing together people of Lohegaon for a common cause. It was a huge success with more than 1500 participants.
With a need to put more constructive efforts in this cause of environment protection our First Mega Plantation event took place on 26th January 2020 at Avani Hills, Lohegaon,with involvement of more than 500 people including local residents, officials & students. We also appreciated the dedication of students by giving them a certificate of appreciation for their contribution. Going forward we have received requests from various organisations to initiate similar plantation drives in their premises & the organisations have taken responsibility to care for the plants in future.
Planting a tree is really a fulfilling task as one is leaving the legacy of environment protection for future generations to come. Team Green Avani will continue its efforts with the local communities & shall ensure that this ‘Green Revolution’ is not far away.
